Steps
Place a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add olive oil and butter to the pot and let them heat up.
Once the oil and butter are hot, add the diced onion, carrots, and celery to the pot. Sauté the vegetables until the onion becomes translucent, which should take about 5 minutes.
Add 1 teaspoon of salt and the garlic to the pot. Cook the mixture for an additional 1 - 2 minutes.
Pour the red wine into the pot. Let the wine simmer for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, add the can of crushed tomatoes, more salt, black pepper to taste, basil, and thyme to the pot.
Cover the pot with a lid. Bring the sauce to a slight boil. Then, turn the heat down to low and let the sauce simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Turn off the heat. Allow the sauce to cool for a few minutes. Then, use an immersion blender or a traditional blender to blend the sauce until it is smooth.
